The feathers that we use for our Juju Hats are Ostrich plumage, Turkey Feathers and plumage, Reeve Pheasant plumage and Lady Amhurst Plumage. Feathers are treated with pesticide in a container on arrival; thereafter some batches are bleached and dyed into various colors.
All our feathers are sealed in plastics and only opened before securing to the circular base. Once the hat is completed each hat gets placed in a plastic bag and sealed.
The flat cane or reeds are treated with CTX 108 (registered trade mark) a organic solvent-based solution for long lasting protection against Insects and fungus.

The flat reed/cane is cut into various sizes folded and tightly weaved into a cylindrical base. The treating cutting and weaving process can take several days to complete. Our Juju hats take 3-4 people on average two days to manufacture depending on size of the hat.
Image to the right is the back view of the juju base after weaving of the base and before the feathers are secured secured to each tip of the hundreds of flat cane/reed pieces to create a well formed circular shape with a full formed cluster in the centre. When not in use the Juju hat can be turned inside out and placed in a plastic bag. Seal the bag with tape and store in a dry place for later use.
As with all feather or fabric products you need to care for your Juju Hat against pests – Spray with insecticide every 5-6 months outdoors when doing spring cleaning alternatively freeze the Juju for 5 days in a plastic bag every 5-6 months or when needed.
In the past in Africa the Juju hat was worn by royalty, chiefs or prominent members of society during royal affairs, weddings or funerals. It is believed that the origin of the Juju hat comes from the Cameroon Western Grasslands.
